Simon Says...

From the Desk of Lew M. Simon, Democratic District Leader, 23rd A.D.P art B

Lew M. Simon Lew M. Simon The last two weeks have been really strenuous as I was sick as a dog with a very bad cold and everything else that goes with it. Special thanks to Dr. Mitchell Kurk, who has been my doctor for the last 47 years. He is the absolute best you could ask for.

When you speak of an old fashioned doctor who cares for and loves his patients, and knows how to diagnose, that's Dr. Kurk. He is a general practitioner and a nutrition specialist. We have once again committed to go back on the diet. We would definitely recommend him.

Congratulations to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Councilman Eric Ulrich and all of the winners of the 2009 general election. The Mayor and Coun - cilman should do the right thing in the Rockaways and give us a subsidized, free ferry as Staten Island has. They should stop the building of unneeded housing and concentrate on improving transportation.

Mayor Bloomberg and Councilman Ulrich should bring a win-win for the Council district by reactivating the Rockaway Beach line of the LIRR to bring back the trip from Rockaway to Manhattan in 32 minutes, Howard Beach to Manhattan in 22 minutes and Ozone Park to Manhat t - an in 18 minutes. It would improve real estate values and the quality of life for local commuters.

An immediate transit imp rove ment could be achieved by extending the hours of operation of express buses to Manhattan to begin at 5 a.m. and end at 1 a.m. seven days a week. Breezy Point residents should be pick ed up at the Marine Park Bridge circle. They should discuss beginning the Su p er A train going non-stop from How ard Beach to Hoyt-Schermerhorn.

I personally called Eric Ulrich to congratulate him on his victory. I look forward to working with him on improving transportation, boardwalk repairs, education, etc. It is time that we get our fair share.

We would like to congratulate Bill de Blasio, our newly elected Public Advo - cate. We know that he will work tirelessly on behalf of New York City residents. We are fully aware that if he does a good job, he will have a good shot at being elec ted mayor next time.

Congratulations to our new Comptroller, John Liu, who we know, with his wisdom and knowledge in finance, will watch over our pension funds and the finances of the city. We are proud to have played a part in electing the first Asian Ame - rican to NYC-wide office.

We would like to congratulate our Borough President, Helen Marshall. We look forward to working with her in making a Rockaway college a reality.

We also want to congratulate Bill Thompson on his outstanding showing in his race for mayor. With only $6 million versus $100 million Thompson came within 4 percent of becoming mayor. If more people believed in him as we did, he would have been mayor. The negative campaign that went on this year has been disgraceful. I, for one, am glad it's over.

To Frank Gulluscio; the one good thing that came out of this campaign was once again having a good friend. Your hard work and enthusiasm goes a long way. We know how hard it is to lose an election. We wish you good things in the future.

Many people have called my office asking for a defensive driving course. We are proud to announce that the GGRDC will be holding a defensive driving course Saturday, December 5 at 10 a.m. at our office at 112-20 Beach Channel Drive. The cost is $45. Members of the GGRDC will pay $40. Make reservations with the Cynthia Bracero Agency at 347-422-3167. Bracero will take credit card info on the phone. You asked for it. We reached out and will be doing this. If attendance warrants, we will be doing this on a regular basis. Completion of the course brings a reduction of premiums for all insurance companies and reduction of points on your driver's license.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Mary Byrne, an outstanding community resident. Mary's involvement through the years with the church, community, St. Patrick's Day Parade fundraiser, and her outstanding love for the Rockaways will be remembe - red. She was a lady of class with a heart of gold. She was one of the best seamstresses you could ever find. She did the sleeves on a jacket of mine. We saw her love for gardening whenever we passed her home in the summer. Her flowers sure made her home and street beautiful.

Mary had a rough time for the last few years battling pancreatic cancer. We sometimes question God why the most beautiful people are given this lousy disease. Mary was a good wife to her late husband and a wonderful mother and grandmother, and a great friend. She was a very soft spoken lady of class. I loved to hear her beautiful brogue.

We know in our heart that God needed a wonderful angel in heaven to sew the wings on the angels as they arrive. Our loss is heaven's gain. Our deepest sympathy to the family.

Our next Atlantic City bus trip is Saturday, November 21. We have had empty seats on recent trips. Please help us and enjoy yourself. The cost is $45 with $30 returned. Bagels are provided by Beach Bagels. We leave at 5:30 p.m. and return at 7:30 a.m. Call 945-1216 for reservations.

You can join the Good Government Regular Democratic Club by sending your dues for $25 to 112-20 Beach Channel Drive, Rockaway Park, NY 11694. Tell us if you want to be part of our Young Professionals or Young Democrats (students) divisions. Come get involved and network in your community.

Please keep the date of Thursday April 15 open for our 22nd Annual Dinner Dance at El Caribe in Mill Basin. Tickets are $75 with tables of 16 for $1200. Honorees will be announced shortly. Send your check to our office or call for any questions.

We wish a happy Thanksgiving to all. I am available for an invitation to attend a Thanksgiving dinner in our community.
