Why Blame Lew?

Dear Editor,

I am responding to a recent Beach - comber item which, without naming names but without an ounce of subtlety, blamed Democratic District Lead er Lew M. Simon for starting the rumor that City Councilman Eric Ulrich was trying to stop funding for the Rockaway Ferry, and to a recent letter which you subsequently publish ed that directly blamed Mr. Simon for this false accusation, which appeared to be in response to your original reporting on what I call, "Ferry-Gate."

I believe that The Wave owes Mr. Simon and its readers an apology for the Beachcomber item, which was little more than publishing rumor and innuendo - certainly not fact. Unless I've missed something, I don't think I have heard any proof Mr. Simon was behind this. The letter referring to Lew and his "minions" appeared to be the work of someone looking to heap bad press on Lew, sort of like giving a guy a bum-rush after someone else (i.e., your newspaper) has delivered the first cheap shot.

I am disappointed that The Wave has chosen to treat Mr. Simon this way since I generally respect the quality of your reporting and your willingness to air various viewpoints and not rush to judgment - this case being a blaring example. As we all know, Mr. Simon is a staunch advocate for causes big and small to im prove the lives of citizens from end to end of this peninsula - and he generally gets results. To accuse someone with the respect of many of this Letters cheap and completely inept rumor without a shred of evidence is as wrong as the wrong perpetrated by the individual or group that started this Ferry Gate rumor against Councilman Eric Ulrich in the first place.
