Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center
In 1987, the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center, a nonprofit, federally qualified health center (FQHC) opened its doors with one building on Beach 67 street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard and quickly became one of the most important facilities on the peninsula to the thousands of locals who used it for their health care needs each year.
Then, its single building had 75 employees and 30,000 patient visits.
Today, nearly 23 years later, the Addabbo center, named after a local Congressman who helped to make it a reality, the health center has five sites and its 285 employees address 120,000 annual patient visits. Those numbers have made Addabbo the largest provider of primary health care in the Rockaways.
And, while the health center has changed physically over the years, its mission has not changed over the past 23 years.
"We care for the uninsured and the medically marginal patients," says Dr. Peter Nelson, the facility's executive director, citing the numerous medical programs the hospital runs.
Its pediatricians do well baby care and immunizations and treat all the usual adolescent medicine problems.
The center's OB/GYN services run the gamut from birth control and family planning to prenatal and postpartum care.
It has a full-service dental clinic that can fill any dental need and a pharmacy that is open to the public as well.
"The art of good patient care is in the caring for the patient," says Dr. Alfonso Chin, the center's medical director.
The Main Site of the Addabbo Family Health Center is located at 6200 Beach Channel Drive in Arverne.
The Far Rockaway site is located at 1288 Central Avenue. Both can be reached by telephone at 718-945-7150.
