Locals Contribute To Mary Louis Swimming Resurgence
The Mary Louis Academy swim ming team continues to rise in the Nassau/Suffolk CHSAA Division and team members from the Rockaways are contributing in a big way.
In 2000, Mary Louis swimming moved from the Brooklyn/Queens Conference to the Nassau/Suffolk Conference, a more competitive league. The team has moved up from seventh place (out of ten teams) to fourth place in that time.
Ellen Lynch, a Rockaway na - tive, took over as coach in 2008. Last year the Hilltoppers secured fourth place and this year are moving up once again in the division.
The Rockaway girls include; seniors Elizabeth Woods (Belle Harbor) and Linda Maloney (Breezy Point); junior Shannon Delfini (Rockaway Park); sophomores Erin Nuszer (Belle Harbor) and Gabrielle O'Byrne (Belle Harbor).
Mary Louis will have the chance to finish in the top three in the division with a meet against the third place team, Kellenberg Memorial High School, on Wednesday, November 4.
The team has the chance to break into the top of the division where Sacred Heart Academy, St. Anthony's High School and Kellenberg Memorial have usually resided.
The Mary Louis swim team hopes to continue this growth in years to come.
