On Friday, October 16 Councilman Eric Ulrich visited the Waterside School for Leadership. He was the first in the new school's speaker series, "Leaders in Our Community."

Each Friday during community assembly meetings, Waterside scholars discuss what it means to be a leader, celebrate the student leaders in the 6th grade community and speak to visitors about what it means to lead one's life, learning and community. This new middle school shares space with PS 225 and another elementary school (PS 317) in Rockaway Park. The school is a 6th - 8th grade model led by school leader, Linda Munro.

During his visit Ulrich spoke to students about the importance of education and reaching their dreams despite the obstacles they may experience. He answered questions from students and gave them advice relating to their academic goals.

Students shared their goals, which ranged from becoming dancers, politicians and archeologists. The councilman encouraged students to work hard and focus in school. He responded to student questions about his upcoming wedding, reasons why he chose his career path, plans for their community and how college prepared him for life.
