Late Goal Helps Rockaway United Defeat Latin Stars
The Rockaway United boys' soccer team fall season has been a thrilling one, to say the least. After an incredible comeback to reach a draw in their first game, their second eclipsed the opener and provided a victory for the team.
Rockaway United and the Latin Stars battled in a constant tug of war in the first half. United's Joey Allesandro was able to slip through the Latin Stars defense and shot the ball, which escaped the grasp of the opponent's goalie and gave Rockaway a 1-0 halftime edge.
Midway through the second half, one of the Latin Stars' forwards sliced through numerous defenders to put one past United's keeper Anthony Cimino. However, the resilient Rockaway boys were not satisfied with ending the game in another tie.
Allesandro intercepted the ball just behind the midfield line, and with some open room in front of him made a mad dash toward the Stars' end. He unleashed a ferocious shot from well outside the box that bent perfectly up and over the Stars' goalkeeper.
Allesandro's speed and two goal performance made him the obvious star of the game but Cimino had another great game in goal.
He did an admirable job of punting out of the box to help start the attack. Colm Williams, Joe Braskey, Chris Koenig, Ryan Fitzgerald, John Baroudas and the always stout Jack MacNamee proved to be a punishing force on defense. They helped stymie the Stars nearly every time they tried to put an attack together.
This Saturday, the United boys travel to Randall's Island for their next match.
