James A. Staples, Jr.
James A. Staples, Jr., 71, a longtime Rockaway resident, died October 2.
Staples was born May 14, 1938, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He served in the Marines before moving to Long Island, New York. He managed Manny's Casino in Lawrence, New York, before moving to Hempstead, New York. He joined the First Baptist Church of Lawrence in 2004.
Staples is preceded in death by his parents, Eddie Mae Powell and James A Staples, Sr.; and aunt, Nettie.
He is survived by his daughter Yahne Winters of Maryland; six sons, James R. Winters of Bronx, New York, Richard Knox, Brandon, Kevin, Joel and James III; four grandchildren, Roderick and Tnazha Winters of Kingston, New York, Gianni Winters of Maryland, and James R Winters, Jr., of Bronx, New York; their grandmother, Valerie Winters of Inwood, New York; brother, David Miles of Atlanta, Georgia; uncle, George Wood, Sr.; cousin, George Woods, Jr., of Chattanooga, Tennessee; many other family members; his extended family; and friend of 40 years, Joe Louis Dixon of Uniondale, New York.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church of Lawrence, Lawrence, New York. Disposition took place at St. Michael's Crematory, East Elmhurst, New York.
