Knights of Columbus Install New Officers
      The Knights of Columbus Council held an installation of officers and convocation following a mass on Sunday, September 27. The traditional ceremony was officiated by the state officers of the Knights of Columbus, John P. Gillespie, the newly installed Grand Knight spoke at the event about the organizations need for growth and recruitment.

Gulluscio, Weiner Campaign Together
     City Council candidate Frank Gulluscio is joined by U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner, Chamber of Commerce of the Rockaways President John Lepore and local small business owners to discuss the negative impact Rockaway bridge tolls have on small businesses and their ability to attract mainland shoppers to the peninsula. Gulluscio and Weiner both called for the abolishment of the Cross Bay Bridge toll for all Queens residents.

All-Hands Fire At Beach 100 Street Bungalow
     Firefighters were called to an all-hands fire at Beach 100 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard last Monday night at about 9:10 p.m. Arriving responders found a bungalow behind the 101 Deli and Bryan's Auto fully involved in flames and smoke. The fire, which started in the bedroom of the one-story home, was quickly extinguished by firefighters. Everybody, including the family cat, exited safely. Photo by Chris Kalisak.

New Student Council At Visitation Academy 2009-2010
      Elections for Student Coun - cil, and class president and vice president were held at Visit ation Academy. The fifth, sixth-, seventh- and eighthgrade students voted for those who would direct various fundraising projects in the eighth-grade through out the school year.

SJEH Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month
      St. John's Episcopal Hospital obser ved National Breast Cancer Aware ness Month in October in numerous ways. The Hospital's Imaging Depart ment extended hours for mammograms. Staff raised more than $14,000 for the American Cancer Society through methods that included raffles and participating in the Making Stri des Against Breast Cancer Walk.

Worldwide Communion Celebrated
      First Congregational Church of Rockaway Beach celebrated Worldwide Communion Sunday recently, with a special performance of "He Reigns Forever" by a new praise dance group spearheaded by church member Deborah Rowe. Praise dance is enjoying popularity as a means of expression in Christian worship ceremonies around the U.S., of late.

Peninsula Hospital Center Holds Island Style Fundraiser
      The 2009 Peninsula Hospital Center (PHC) Anniversary Ball will be held October 31, starting at 6 p.m., at El Caribe in Brooklyn, New York. The event will be South Seas themed with elements of Hawaii, Tahiti and Polynesia. There will be leis and grass skirts, dining, and music provided by the band Sounds of Infinity.

Hell House Is Hell No More
Neighbors, City Clean Up Rat Infested Property
     In May of this year, The Wave ran a front page story on an abandoned Beach 87 Street property that the owner had allowed to become a ratinfested garbage dump. The neighbors termed it a "Hell House," and the name stuck. Now, however, although the property is still abandoned and the owner is now - here to be found, the neighbors, working with the Department of Health and the Department of Sanitation, have worked for weeks to clean the property.

It Wasn't A Water Main Break
     The corner of Newport Avenue and Beach 120 Street in Rockaway Park was completely inundated for a brief period of time during this past weekend's Nor'easter. The DEP was called, but no operation occurred to unclog the storm drain. The photos show the water level rose to completely cover the roadway at the high tides on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The roadway was back to normal within 20 minutes as the tide receded. There were reports that the area of Beach 90 Street was similarly flooded over the weekend. Photos by Vivian Carter.
