First Congregational Church Plans Fall Activities
The members of the First Congregational Church of Rockaway Beach were hard at work this past summer, and a "crop" of fall activities are now underway. Participants from the community-at-large are always invited to share in the festivities, as well.
The summer talent project, which was started by the late pastor Henry M. Childs Jr., has continued for decades at First Congregational. In June, deacons distribute dollar coins to members, who then retain the coin as a reminder of a particular biblical story, as they contribute their talents in various ways to the betterment of the church. Members baked bread, made jam, and created other crafts that were also sold to raise funds. Another member contributed her painting skills to improve the church property.
Other members formed two gardening groups and planted vegetables, herbs, annuals and perennials to beautify the church. The children's garden sprouted a crop of cucumbers, and the parsley and chives from the herb garden were so abundant the harvest was shared with volunteers at the Culinary Kids Garden in Far Rock-away.
This coming weekend, the Ladies' Aid Society of First Congregational commences the season with their Fall Thrift Sale, the "granddaddy of thrift sales" in the Rockaways. Used clothing, household items and refreshments will be available for purchase on October 9 and 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds raised by Ladies'Aid benefit the church and other charitable causes.
A Halloween Party for children and teens featuring costumes, games and snacks will be held at the church on Sunday, October 24 from 5 - 8 p.m. Cost is $5.00. All youth from the community are invited to attend.
