Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Hosts Children's Art Exhibit
Children on Beach 87 Street were excited about their first photography exhibition last Saturday, where family and friends would come to see the unveiling of a project on which they had been working all summer. Nearly one hundred people came out to attend the Beach 87 Street Kids Project exhibit, hosted at the home of Lois and Scott Klossner, and sponsored by Rockaway Waterfront Alliance. The exhibit displayed photographs taken by 15 kids on Beach 87 Street to raise funds for a skate share on their block. This was the first time for many to take part in such a project. It was the idea of photographer Beth Perkins, who led the kids in their efforts.
"There were a lot of kids on our block who had few activities to keep them busy and my husband Keone and I wanted to do what we could to get them actively involved in something. The photo project seemed like a good way for them to learn a skill and raise funds for a skate share that would benefit all the kids on the block."
The kids went out with Perkins in small groups to photograph places that had significance for them in Rockaway. Perkins and the students reviewed the contact sheets and edited the final selections for the photo exhibition, where the kids, their families and community members were invited to come celebrate and show their support.
The photos are now for sale in a bound book of the exhibit titled "beach 87 street" on Blurb.com.
To purchase or review the book, go to blurb.com, under bookstore, and type in "beach 87 street." A portion of the proceeds will go to support Rockaway Waterfront Alliance programs.
