High School Roundup: Peninsula Volleyball Teams Take Shape

By Elio Velez

Scholars Academy (2-1) came back after losing the first set to Campus Magnet to win on Tuesday afternoon, 18-25, 25-18, 15-10.

Scholars began as a middle school five years ago and the high school is currently in their third year.

Though the Seawolves are entering their first year as a varsity squad, 10 of the players have had years of experience playing on the middle school and the junior varsity team.

"We been learning to stay positive and keep our heads up," sophomore Shannon Toomey said.

Beach Channel wins

The Lady Dolphins made a comeback in the first set and held off a late rally from Far Rockaway to win 25-23, 25-20 on Tuesday afternoon. Beach Channel improved to 1-2 as they fell 21-14 in the first set before rallying to victory. They held off a 11-point Seahorses rally in the second set.

"We were a little nervous and scared," said Ashley Ayala, who recorded 13 saves and 14 service points. "But I told my players to keep moving and we did it."

Far Rockaway fell to 0-2. Coach Jimmy Chan remains positive as he works with an entirely brand new roster. "It's a teaching year and hopefully by next year we will improve and we can get more involvement," Chan said.
