Municipal Lot A Great Place To Start

Dear Editor,

It is wonderful to see that the city is restoring the Beach 116 Street municipal parking lot. It is a needed improvement. As the lot at Beach 116 Street is about to get a face lift, I am hoping that the city has considered adding one thing that would have made the new Waldbaum's parking lot a five out of five stars; and that is trees.

Trees in Rockaway are scare in many areas. One of those areas is along Beach Channel Drive near Beach 116 Street I remember when the city's Greenstreets program planted trees along the median of Beach Channel Drive only to have them uprooted a couple of years later. We are sorely in need of trees on the pennisula. They help manage wind, they keep streets cool in the summer, they aid in general health by helping to filter the air we breathe, and they can be quite beautiful. Trees do not take away parking spots in parking lots.

They would help keep your car cool while you are in the store, and they would make both the municipal lot and the Waldbaum's lot beautiful places to leave your car as you support Rockaway businesses. I am hoping it will happen, it would add greatly to the quality of life on the Peninsula. That being said, there are a number of other shopping parking lots that could also benefit from trees, such as at Beach 84 Street and near the Mott Avenue train station. By all means, I hope if others feel the same way, they will let our representatives know as well as the store owners. The municipal lot though, is a great place to start.
