Two Big Weekends Of ARTSPLASH: Dance, Music, Theater, Spoken Word, Artists' Insights
Commmentary by Susan Hartenstein

Mark your calendars now for RAA free events at Fort Tilden:

Saturday, October 3, sTudio 7:

1 p.m.: Mari Meade Dance company will perform "Community:Ratio." Meade is currently a Kenan Fellow at Lincoln Center Institute. The dancers are Breanna Gribble, Amanda Hinchley and Meade, who is the choreographer. It has been said of Meade, "[her] fearless choreography uses the dancers as instruments to tell abstract stories through rhythm driven movement."

2 p.m., sTudio 6: The 10 master printmakers of InkSplash will discuss their work and the range of techniques they used. Take heart! You will soon understand why a wood block print is different from an etching; what makes a piece an aquatint; and the beauties of chine collé.

Sunday, October 4:

1:30 p.m., sTudio 7: the RAA Writers Group will present original short works written by members of the group. "The Concrete Boat" by Carolyn Rushefsky, read by Geoff Rawling, is the story of a woman seeking to be happy once more, and the unusual man with whom she tentatively begins a relationship. "Raising a Little Hell," a play by Maureen Mc- Nelis, is a mother-daughter tale in which the daughter makes a request of her mother that is 'pregnant' with possibilities. The actors are Mary Beth Callahan and Susan Hartenstein. "Gifts From the Sea," written and read by Martha Killian, is the vivid recounting of a sweet memory from her childhood in Breezy Point. "Claudius and Marcus" by Liz Guarino is a funny satire set in ancient Rome … with intrusions from the modern world. Actors are Callahan and Rawling. "Harry Will Live" is a poignant story, skillfully written by Stephen Shaikowitz, made more poignant by the fact that it is true.

Shaikowitz will read his own piece. "Boardwalk Talk" is a play by Mary Najeddine starring Tommy Burke, Callahan, and Martha and Jim Killian. The play is a series of brief yet telling, humorous snatches of conversation between couples, overheard under the boardwalk. Introductions and musical interludes will be provided by Dan Guarino.

Saturday, October 10:

2 p.m., sTudio 7: The Martha Cardona Opera Project. To highlight their coming season, the "talented members of the Martha Cardona Theater," as Don Evans of The Brooklyn Eagle calls them, will perform excerpts from La Boheme, L'Elisir d'Amore, Rigoletto and Gianni Schicchi.

Sunday, October 11:

From 1 p.m. till early evening join RAA for a GREAT day. It is the last day of ARTSPLASH and we are ending it in celebration, good company and food. We will have an Open Bid Fundraiser Auction, Viewers' Choice Award, and our Annual RAA BBQ/Picnic (bring something delicious for the Banquet Table). Don't miss out on the fun of bidding for a wonderful piece of art, at affordable prices, while helping RAA at the same time.
