Rockaway Fisheads Drop First Rugby Game

By Alan Shaw

Rockaway uses their strong pack to control the scrum. Rockaway uses their strong pack to control the scrum. Rockaway Rugby had a bump in the road last Saturday. After coming off two commanding wins, Rockaway was in a battle till the final seconds.

With the team down by more than one score at halftime, they rallied together and were ahead with three minutes left to play. Then the penalties ensued and the team, on the verge of scoring the winning try, was whistled for the last penalty of the game. With many chances to put this game away the squad just couldn't get over the hump. This was a disappointing loss for Rockaway who had hopes of going undefeated into the playoffs.

The team had many phases of great rugby play. With fast ball movement in the back line by Kermit Eagan and Barry Cowhead the team scored tries from Back Capt. Tommy Burns and winger Tommy French.

With hard hits and strong runs from Scott Bloudstein and Andy Israel, Rockaway looked poised to take this game. The overall effort was deflated by penalties and the outcome was not with the Fisheads on this day.

With not many games left, now is the time to go out to watch some great rugby action. As always, festivities will take place afterwards led by Kris Callaghan. Come out and support the Fisheads as they make their push into the playoffs.
