Drenched On Saturday, Becalmed On Sunday
After a year's hiatus, the Rockaway Kite Festival returned to Riis Park last weekend and ran right into weather problems. On Saturday, the skies opened up, forcing the kiters to rein in their massive kites. On Sunday, the famous Rockaway wind stopped blowing, and the majority of the big kites were grounded once more. Lots of kids, however, still had fun making their own kites and flying them in the thin wind and rain. The festival, sponsored by the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce, has become one of the late summer's premier events.
