St. John's Episcopal Hospital re-cently named the winners of its Green Thumb Team awards. Numerous hospital departments "adopted" a tree bed from among the approximately 40 such beds that surround the campus. The departments planted flowers, tending them throughout the summer. Recently Margaret Carpenter, president, St. John's Development Board, and horticulturist Daphne Hellmuth came to judge the best of the gardens. Earlier in the summer, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation gave an onsite talk to hospital staff on caring for the tree beds.
