Kids Back To The Books At Local Schools

With their desks occupied once again, the school kids are geared up for another successful year of reading, writing and other subjects. Good luck to all kids as they hit the books once more!

The 10th Annual John J. Monahan Softball Tournament will take place on Saturday, September 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the 20th Road Field. There is a $300 entry fee per team which includes umpire fees and the party after the tournament at Grassy Point. All teams and individuals welcome. For more information call Heidi at 718-634- 8098. All proceeds go to BCAC.

BCAC St. Camillus/St. Virgilius Girls and Boys Swim Team registration will take place on Saturday, September 19 and Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the BCAC Memorial Field. For further information contact Nancy at 718- 945-1329 for the girl's swim team or Freddy at 718-474-2539; leave message, call will be returned.

A two-session Defensive Driving Course will be given on Wednesday, October 14 and Thursday, October 15 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the School Building at 16 Noel Road in Broad Channel, in the lunchroom.

By taking this course, you can receive a 10 percent reduction on your car insurance for 3 years or up to 4 points off your license. No test will be given. Fee is $60. If you attended the course in March, 2006, your certificate expires in March. Payment in full guarantees a seat — they are unable to hold a seat without payment. The course is sponsored by St. Virgilius Church and all proceeds benefit St. Virgilius religious education program.

The Broad Channel Athletic Club presents the 3rd Annual BCAC Memorial Golf Outing in Memory of John W. (Jack) Kase, which will be held at Forest Park Golf Course on Friday, October 16. Check-in is at 8 a.m. for a 9 a.m. tee off.

Shotgun Start based on 100 golfers. The cost will be $150 per golfer or $600 per foursome. Price includes: a round of golf with cart, breakfast at the course, lunch at the turn, soda, beer and water on the course during the round, golf goody bag and shirt and the awards dinner after golf at the North Channel Yacht Club.

There will be contests: closest to the pin, long drive, straight drive, low round foursome. Prizes and raffles will be given at the dinner. Dinner only will cost $50. For more information contact: John Blake 917-603-7113 or juka693@aol.com

Nominations are now open for the 2009 I Love My Librarian Award. Library users nominate to recognize librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community. Nominations will run through October 9 and are accepted online at: ilovelibraries. org/ilovemylibrarian

Take part in an "Afternoon Walk With a Ranger" at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, September 21 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It is the International Day of Peace — a perfect day to explore the refuge.

Take part in an "Evening Walk" at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, September 22 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

It is the first evening of fall — a perfect time to walk in the refuge with a ranger.

Turning out every year for the Grand Parade is a time honored tradition in Broad Channel, whether you're a marcher or a spectator. This year's parade turned out to be one of the best in recent years, with lots of kids in the parade and hundreds of spectators lining Cross Bay Boulevard.
