Mary Davis, a longtime Rockaway resident, died September 2.
Davis was born on February 17, 1932 in Buffalo, New York. She was heavily involved in many aspects of St. John's Baptist Church in Arverne for more than 40 years, as well as being a member of the Heavenly Gospel Chorus. She provided daycare services for more than 35 years and enjoyed sewing and reading.
Davis is survived by eight children, Anita Crumpton, Leon Davis, Darlene Davis, La Mont Davis, Camille Davis, Belinda Davis, Venice (Adrian) Mondesir and Denise (Leroy)Hamm; 27 grandchildren; 14 great grand children; three siblings, Leroy Mason, Theodore Mason and Bevell Mason; a host of nieces and nephews; adopted children; grandchildren; extended families, the Walkers, the Waters; special friends, Janie Jackson, Yvonne Harris, Pearl Williams, Naomi Hartley, Margaret Davis, Linda Sims, and Sheila Waters; Rockaway friends, Anne King, Latha Glover, Gladys Pugh, Stella Jeter, Edith Spears, Martha Washington, Elizabeth King, Marie Thorpe and Sarah Brown; the Jamaica Whist Circle and her St. John's Bible Baptist Church family. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. A memorial service was held at St. John's Baptist Church in Arverne. Interment took place at Rosehill Cemetary, Linden, New Jersey.
