The Edifices Of Rockaway Past And Present: Where Are They?
|Once there was a railroad, made it run, made it race against time. The railroad is still there, but this station is not. The building still stands, but serves a very different purpose than it did when this photo was snapped. Still serving the community after 100 years, but now a lot larger and more expensive than in this 1955 photograph. Tucked away in Bayswater, this plant serves our "power pocket" and keeps us bright. No longer the fine hotel it once was, where is this building and for what is it presently used? This old building is still standing on Central Avenue in the Far Rockaway shopping area, but it stands much taller today. One of Rockaway's most important institutions, when it was being built. Notice also the construction going on to the north, across Beach Channel Drive. Another local landmark, which is more than 100 years old, stands in Bays-water serving the pen-insula's youth. Some would say that this old photograph was taken in Rockaway's heyday, but few are left to talk about that time. At the time this photograph was taken, this was one of the more modern buildings in Rockaway. What has it become? ANSWERS NEXT WEEK! |
