The end of the beach season was more of a whimper this year as red flags and cool weather kept swimmers from going into the ocean for that final swim of summer 2009. Labor Day on Rockaway's east end beaches was more of a day to laze on the beach, make sandcastles or fish along the shoreline. O'Donohue Park played host to families getting in that last barbeque of the summer before sending the children back to school, while walkers strolled along the promenade and boardwalk, and families took their bikes out for a spin.
