Historical Views of the Rockaways

A Blast From The Past!!! New Cars Sold Here!!!
From The Rockaway Museum by Emil Lucev, Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke

Many, many years ago… in a Rockaway so far, far away … there were many new car showrooms in Far Rockaway, and down the peninsula from Arverne to Rockaway Park. General Motors, Chrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company, and many other automobile manufacturers had sales and service places here, and one by one they left for lack of sales and service customers. On of the most prominent car dealers was the Herbst Brothers Oldsmobile Sales and service place. The original showroom, was located on Beach 64 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and their service place was at Beach 71 Street and Amstel Boulevard, both in Arverne. After World War Two a new combined sales and service building was opened on Nameoke Street in Far Rockaway, and remained there until the building of the Far Rockaway shopping center in the late 1950s. The present LIRR station was moved to Nameoke Street and took over the Herbst site.
