Notes from the High C's

Rockaway Music and Arts Council
by Sharon Gabriel

Well, here it is, the 25th Annual Fall Festival of The Rockaway Music and Arts Council.

Who would have thought that from that first festival at Fort Tilden with homemade chocolate chip cookies that we ourselves baked for sale, we would now have so many food vendors replacing us ... and thank goodness they are, for the festival has grown by leaps and bounds and is almost getting too much for our small group to handle all by ourselves.

So as we always say, we need your assistance in helping us man the event. It's not too late to help, just see Fern Liberman at the event this weekend and she might possibly have something for you to do.

In any event, we are looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend. Just hope for good weather which is our mantra for this week before the festival. We watch the weather forecasts diligently hoping to see sun for Saturday and Sunday.

Light a few candles in church, say a few prayers in synagogue and anything else that might help to bring us good weather as we look forward to this wonderful event.

Of course, food is always important and one of our new food vendors is Smokin' Rob's Barbeque. Rob has everything from wings to ribs to chili, etc. and that's where I'm going to be heading. I'm a real wings person, but don't tell anyone. There will be the usual, spiral potatoes, smoothie drinks, franks and other goodies and not to be missed is The Pickle People. They have the best pickles ever and if you're thinking of getting some, get on line early because I've seen the line going all the way down the walkway toward the boardwalk. Try to get some just before you eat and enjoy them with your lunch.

Ronald McDonald will be with us on Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. He will do his show and then a walk-around to greet everyone, and that means the parents as well as the kids. I've seen many a parent asking for a picture with Ronald, so don't be embarrassed if you want one, just go up to Ronald and he is very happy to oblige.

Very important members of our festival are our sponsors. For the past several years, Arverne By The Sea has been a sponsor of our Party Pets Petting Zoo as you can see by their banner posted at the event. This year we have another sponsor, Belle Shores, who will be sponsoring our pony rides. Both of these organizations are the future of Rockaway and with so many new homeowners, we are attracting more and more of our neighbors to our festival each year.
