Broad Channel Bits

It was a great day Sunday for a parade — comfortable temperatures and the right amount of sunshine. And the Grand Parade was — well — grand! The floats were very imaginative and a lot of hard work clearly went into each of them. As always, both watchers and participants had a great time! Now it's back to school and hitting the books! All school bound folks are wished a happy and successful school year.

The 10th Annual John J. Monahan Softball Tournament will take place on Saturday, September 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the 20th Road Field. There is a $300 entry fee per team which includes umpire fees and the party after the tournament at Grassy Point. All teams and individuals welcome. For more information call Heidi at 718-634- 8098. All proceeds go to BCAC.

Saturday Mass is celebrated at 4 p.m. at St. Virgilius Church on Noel Road since September 5; during the summer months it was held at 7 p.m. The Sunday Mass remains unchanged; it will be celebrated, as usual, at 10 a.m.

BCAC St. Camillus/St. Virgilius Girls and Boys Swim Team registration will take place on Saturday, September 19 and Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the BCAC Memorial Field. For further information contact Nancy at 718-945- 1329.

A two-session Defensive Driving Course will be given on Wednesday, October 14 and Thursday, October 15 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the School Building at 16 Noel Road in Broad Channel, in the lunchroom. By taking this course, you can receive a 10 percent reduction on your car insurance for three years or up to four points off your license. No test will be given. Fee is $60. If you attended the course in March, 2006, your certificate expires in March. Payment in full guarantees a seat — they are unable to hold a seat without payment. The course is sponsored by St. Virgilius Church and all proceeds benefit St. Virgilius religious education program.

The Broad Channel Athletic Club presents the 3rd Annual BCAC Memorial Golf Outing in Memory of John W. (Jack) Kase. It will be held at Forest Park Golf Course on Friday, October 16. Check-in is at 8 a.m. for a 9 a.m. tee off. Shotgun Start based on 100 golfers. The cost will be $150 per golfer or $600 per foursome. Price includes: a round of golf with cart, breakfast at the course, lunch at the turn, soda, beer and water on the course during the round, golf goodie bag and shirt and the awards dinner after golf at the North Channel Yacht Club.

There will be contests: closest to the pin, long drive, straight drive, low round foursome. Prizes and raffles will be given at the dinner. Dinner only will cost $50. For more information contact: John Blake 917-603-7113 or juka693@aol.com

Veterans who were in the military during certain dates are invited to join American Legion Post 1404. Dates are as follows: December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1955; June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955; February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975; August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984; December 29, 1989 to January 31, 1990, and August 1990 until cessation, determined by United States government. Above dates are from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Lebanon/Grenada, Panama and Gulf War, respectively. Meetings are first and third Friday of each month at 8:30 p.m. at the American Legion on Crossbay Boulevard in Broad Channel. Boundaries include Broad Channel and all of Howard Beach.

Women from Broad Channel, the Rockaway peninsula and other areas who are interested in discerning a religious vocation are invited to the St. Virgilius Convent at 210 Noel Road in Broad Channel on Sunday, September 13, 1 to 5 p.m. for an Afternoon of Vocation Discernment sponsored by the Daughters of Wisdom. Nominations are now open for the 2009 I Love My Librarian Award. Library users nominate to recognize librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community. The BCVFD hopes everyone had an enjoyable Labor Day weekend. They would like to thank all who participated in the festivities and all whose hard work and dedication made all of the summer's activities possible!

Take part in the Butterfly Count at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Look for monarch butterflies, dragonflies and warblers with naturalist Don Riepe. Walk around the West Pond Trail, then carpool to other sites. Reservations are required. Bring binoculars. Call 718-318-4340.

People under 16 can clear the fines off their library cards. Stop in at the library and learn how. Or call 718- 318-4943 and ask about it. It's easy!

Many people have been getting telemarketing phone calls offering debt consolidation. They leave long messages on answering machines. Just delete them and pay no attention to them. What kind of business comes calling to see if they're needed? Only the ones you really don't need or want!
