Road Traveling Seahorses Look To Slice Trojans
The PSAL computers decide the varsity football schedule that Far Rockaway/FDA VI will play this season. It may have been coincidence or just fate, but on Saturday at 12 noon, the season opener will have the Seahorses travel to upper Manhattan to play a familiar foe.
Seahorses coach Walt Wilkerson didn't like the end result when George Washington High School won a 20-14 overtime battle in the PSAL Cup Division title game last November at Midwood Field. Although Wilkerson retains good memories of his team that went 8-1 in the regular season last year, the only mission he is concentrating on is getting a win against the Trojans on Saturday.
"I'm not going to remember what happened last year when we get on the field. It's going to be another game but one we want to win," Wilkerson said. "But I think some of the players might feel differently than I do."
Wilkerson is looking for returning starters such as OL/DL Chris Rainey, DB/LB Everette Harrison and RB Travis Wright, to step up their production. WR/DB Jevaughn Pinnock and OL Tyquan Davis are also veterans who will return. Though Far Rockaway gets a few starters back, they need production from a few players to match the departed RB Gregory Ibe. The senior runningback did everything for the Seahorses offense in rushing for 1,090 yards, scoring 10 touchdowns and a threat anytime to get a touchdown. For a squad that will most likely carry up to 25 players due to the low enrollment at the school, it is most important for the Seahorses to avoid having injuries to key players.
