The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League concluded the 2009 season with their annual Awards Dinner on Friday, August 28 at Jameson's with 75 players eager to party the night away. A rocking good time was had by all, and was aided by the music of DJ Bobby Joseph. Good food and cold beer is the usual formula for a fun time with this group and once again it proved successful. More ... The PSAL computers decide the varsity football schedule that Far Rockaway/FDA VI will play this season. It may have been coincidence or just fate, but on Saturday at 12 noon, the season opener will have the Seahorses travel to upper Manhattan to play a familiar foe. More ... It was a surprise to high school football coaches and media pundits when they got word of what happened last November in Staten Island. Beach Channel/Channel View had pulled off the major upset of the PSAL campaign as the 15th ranked Dolphins defeated the second seed Curtis Warriors, 8-0, in the first round. More ... The Broad Channel Athletic Club will hold soccer registration on Tuesday, September 8 at BCAC Field on Cross Bay Boulevard and First Road. Registration will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. There will be co-ed registration. Children from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade are eligible to register. More ... After a long summer hiatus, Rockaway Rugby is back. This Saturday at 1 p.m. in Fort Tilden, the local Fisheads will take on Gotham. This is the Fisheads' first game of the season as they look to steamroll through the division. More ... Last week's northeast winds seemed to stir up the local fishing a bit. The cooler temperatures and brisk winds didn't deter anglers from venturing on the water. Bluefish once located either by the telltale flocks of birds working overhead, or by savvy captains who know their haunts, have been the staple of the summer's fishing. More ... On Saturday, September 19, the Rock the Beach 5K Run/Walk will take place on the boardwalk at Beach 29 Street. The competition will be open to runners of all ages. The event will start at 9:30 a.m. Cash or checks will be accepted at the on-site registration. More ... Local golfer Xander McDonald- Smith of The First Tee of Nassau County/New York is playing Pebble Beach this weekend at the Walmart First Tee Open.
