Bloody Hammel Houses Assault
Many residents of the Hammel Houses were awakened from their beds by the sirens of ambulances and police when a man was found lying on the ground outside the public housing complex last Saturday morning with a deep laceration to his head, police said.
Police responded to an ongoing assault call on August 29 at 2:26 a.m. at the intersection of Beach 81 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. At the scene they found Norman Martin, 43, lying on the ground with a laceration to his head and with no other apparent injuries, according to police.
The victim's vehicle was located one block away, inside the housing complex with the engine still running. It is unknown how and why the victim strayed that far from his vehicle. Police said Martin was unable to provide a description of his attacker or direction of flight.
Martin was transported to Peninsula Hospital Center while police set up a crime scene around Hammel Houses looking for any witnesses, evidence or suspects, but this yielded no results.
Martin's condition worsened when his brain began to bleed and swell forcing doctors to have him transported to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, a designated level one trauma center. He is listed in critical condition.
