A SAD MONTH
Ordinarily I look forward to the month of September. We are all back refreshed hopefully by some sort of vacation. Our friends and doctors and merchants can now be reached. We are preparing for the New Year, for a festive holiday season and sometimes even feel the intimation of fall and its crisp air, a welcome antidote to the 99 degree weather and humidity.

More On Our Imperious Mayor Mike: Or, Why You should Start Worrying And Vote For Somebody Else
Mayor Michael Bloomberg continues to spend millions on his reelection bid, smug in his belief that he is the only person in the entire universe that can govern New York City, or rather Manhattan, which is his version of New York City.

ARTSPLASH Expands And, 'You Say Tomato, I Say … '
In my acknowledgements last week of those who made possible the successful premiere of "Paint Out," the terrifically enjoyable creative event presented by Art Adventures and More and co-sponsored by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and Arverne by the Sea, I neglected to mention Laura Sporny of Arverne by the Sea.

Broad Channel Bits
A little bit wet, a little bit cool — quite an approach to Labor Day! Not wishing to hurry the season at all, I hesitate to mention that some of the trees have leaves that are turning color already. In fact, the cool, wet summer we had was way up there in the record books … and made it feel like summer flew by!

The Diary Of A Green Thumb
The Colorful Story Behind Autumn Foliage
Have you ever wondered why there are so many shades of beautiful oranges, yellows and burgundies that fill the leaves on the trees in the fall? Well, each leaf is a little food factory that creates nutrients for the tree so it can live and grow.

It is time for the Democratic primary election on Tuesday, September 15 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. You may vote at your usual voting places. This is the slate of candidates we are supporting. We support Mark Green for Public Advocate. He had eight great years of experience in that job, after serving as Commissioner of Consumer Affairs.

Historical Views of the Rockaways
The Beachfront In Front Of Old L.A. Thompson Amusement Park - 1924
s the gentleman in the view appearing today stoops over to get a better look at the sand that has collected under the old wooden boardwalk, we get a good look at the whole of the scene, and the sand collected by the 300 foot jetty put in by L.A. Thompson in the year before … for that specific purpose.

Brooklynites Favor Kennedy's
Not only is Kennedy's on the Bay in Breezy Point one of the top restaurants in Rockaway, but I met Kristen and Michael Strehle from Brooklyn who chose Kennedy's to celebrate the christening of their new baby, Robert, born July 11, 2009. All 43 guests (19 kids and 24 adults, including little brother Timothy, 2) were having a very merry time.

The Progressive
Random Thoughts
When school bells ring, and the barbecues begin to be put away for the winter, and the labor day sales and parades are over, most of us then seriously return to normal. This summer most Americans reflected on the economy and the state of our health care delivery system.

It's My Turn
Facts Are Not Distortions
When it comes to evaluating the claims of Democrats about rationing and how to deal with grandma, I am guided by that great philosopher, Marx. That's Groucho, not Karl, who famously said, "Who do you believe, me or your eyes?

The Inner Voice
When we feel we can't control a situation that concerns us, we may feel helpless or lost or in danger. We start to imagine a variety of endings that go from one extreme to another. It is hard to relax and just let the time unfold. While waiting, we can imagine the good and see ourselves in a good place.

Looking Backward
What The Wave Said 20 Years Ago... 20 Robert Waters, 27, of Rockaway Beach rescued a boy who was being swept out and under on Sunday, September 3, in the vicinity of Beach 90 Street; but because the rescuer was not trained and used unorthodox ways to hold on, he was sharply criticized, not thanked.
