Arrest Made In Fatal Brick Beating

By Nicholas Briano

A Far Rockaway man was arrested last week for allegedly beating someone to death with a brick this past May, police said.

Hector Funez, 25, of 13-41 Chandler Street, allegedly attacked two men during an argument on Beach 20 Street near Cornaga Avenue at 4 a.m. on May 9, reported police.

One of the victims suffered a head wound requiring staples, while the other victim, Juan Zepeda, 38, was struck in the head with the brick and lost consciousness, according to court papers.

He was hospitalized on life support with minimal brain activity and eventually died on May 16, according to police. The autopsy concluded that Zepeda died from the injuries suffered that night.

Funez was re-arrested Thursday. He was originally charged back in May with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. No murder charges have as yet been filed.
