RWA Workshop Promotes Water Conservation

The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) recently held a Community Weekend Workshop to share information with members of the community about the value of being vigilant about water consumption, as water is one of the most essential and scarcest resources on the planet.

The DEP was in attendance at the workshop to distribute barrels as part of their Rain Barrel Giveaway Pilot program. The program, which started in spring 2008, is meant to give homeowners a chance to participate in water conservation. The barrels are equipped with technology that captures rainwater, which can later be used in gardens, on lawns, for recreational activities, and to help alleviate the crippling effects of flash floods on sewage treatment plants throughout the city. The DEP distributed 25 barrels and patented water diverter systems to the public for free.
