From The Artists Studio Rockaway Artists Alliance
ARTSPLASH 2009 multimedia arts event is the next "big thing" on the RAA calendar. Each autumn the full complement of RAA exhibition and performance spaces that make up the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) in Fort Tilden vibrate with original visual, literary and performing works in all media, from all over the United States and from other countries. These venues include the sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 galleries, the outdoor sculpture garden, the indoor stage in sTudio 7 and the outdoor Moonstage. Each year RAA adds a new feature to the event and this year is no exception. Members of the RAA Writers Group will present readings and performances of prose, poetry, plays and other literary forms on a specially selected Sunday afternoon. Because of the breadth of artists RAA now encompasses, some of the works will include music; some will be performed by actors; all will show the strength and variety and vibrancy that RAA fosters when artists of all stripes are encouraged to "jam" together. Follow this column for the date of that special Sunday and the schedule of other performing events.
This year ARTSPLASH will run from September 13 through October 11. It is presented in partnership with the National Park Service/Gateway National Recreation Area. Gallery hours for ARTSPLASH 2009: Saturdays 12 p.m. - 4 p.m., Sundays 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and by appointment. The opening reception: September 13, p.m. - 3 p.m. Refreshments and live entertainment will liven up the afternoon.
An Auction Wall is yet another special feature of ARTSPLASH 2009. Artists may submit a maximum of two pieces, the drop-off dates and times for which will be the same as the drop-off for ARTSPLASH: Sunday, August 30, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and Tuesday, September 1, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. ALL WORK MUST BE READY FOR HANGING. Contact RAA for any questions.
REMINDER: This is the final weekend to see the unique, "The Art of Robin and William Pogrebitskiy," the exhibition that brings together the beautiful and dynamic wood sculptures of Robin Pogrebitskiy and the powerful political cartoons of his late father, William Pogrebitskiy. Equally contemporary and timeless, these works demonstrate the eternal significance that splendid art and ideas can have. See the column's 'gray box' for details.
Monday, August 24 saw the successful premiere of what is hoped to be a regular event - "Paint Out." Seventy to eighty people, children and adults of all ages, came out in the morning sun at Beach 73 Street and the boardwalk to try painting seascapes; it was open to the community (not all were artists). All art supplies were sponsored by Arverne by the Sea and no experience was required. A brief instruction and a hand-out were presented by Art Adventures and More. The event was co-sponsored by Arverne by the Sea and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Jill Weber, NYC Parks Administrator said that she was thrilled to partner with Art Adventures and More. "It was a unique program that enriches the community. We look forward to presenting additional arts programs like this on the boardwalk." One participant said, "Rockaway certainly needs more arts events like this one."
In addition to compliments to Arverne by the Sea and the Department of Parks, Art Adventures and More directors Sophia Skeans and Amanda Francin would like to acknowledge: New York State Senator Malcolm Smith; Geoff Rawling, president of RAA, who gave a spectacular demonstration of how to paint seascapes; the visual artists who lent a hand; modern dancer Mari Meade, who performed a magical dance piece (Meade is presently in the Keenan Performing Arts Fellowship at Lincoln Center Institute); and all the wonderful assistants, volunteers and participants for their outstanding interest and support.
