Supporting Local Lifeguards

Dear Editor,

As generational Rockaway residents, and true beach lovers, we wanted to take this opportunity to commend our hardworking lifeguards. We sit on the beach between Beach 123 Street and Beach 124 Street, and since the beginning of summer we have continuously witnessed true professionalism from our lifeguards. We have seen first-hand dedication to keeping our waters safe. Although there have been many instances where our lifeguards performed their duties diligently, this was never more evident than on Saturday, August 1.

The water was rough and our lifeguards were on their toes. About twenty non-experienced swimmers entered the surf and did not heed the warnings of the lifeguards to stay close to shore. Unfortunately, some of them started struggling. Two lifeguards, David and Michelle, sprang into action when six of the swimmers started getting pulled out. They rescued all six simultaneously.

Their day was not over. Thirty minutes later, as our guards continued to warn people about rip tides, two swimmers who were not prepared to handle the Rockaway current entered the ocean. Fortunately for them, David and Michelle were prepared. They swam quickly and brought both Letters of them to safety immediately.

These two lifeguards are the pride of Rockaway Beach. We are certain that they, along with all our lifeguards, enable us and our children to enjoy summer after summer at the greatest place on earth, the beach. Please support our local lifeguards. Let everyone know the good they do each day.

GENEVIEVE SHAW
