As part of RDRC's Summer Youth program, approximately 20 area teens took to the streets of downtown Far Rockaway this summer in a program to clean the streets of the business district. On August 13, those who took part in 'Operation Clean Street' were recognized for their efforts at an end of summer barbeque held in the common way on Beach 20 Street in downtown Far Rockaway.

Valerie West, the director of community affairs and government relations, said the agency's executive director, Kevin Alexander, decided to use RDRC's Summer Youth program to help clean up the streets of Far Rockaway.

"It was an opportunity for [the youngsters] to get to know the merchants and give back to the community," said West, who added that RDRC had received "lots of compliments [about the teens] from merchants and residents."

New York City Councilman James Sanders Jr. speaks to two of the program's teens. Ages of those in 'Operation Clean Streets' ranged from 14- to 18- years-of-age.
