Fallen Hero Honored At Basketball Tournament

Before the tournament organizers took a moment to honor Hernandez. Before the tournament organizers took a moment to honor Hernandez. At a basketball tournament on Saturday, August 1, the NYPD Juvenile Robbery Intervention Program, in conjunction with "Let's Rock the Hoops," took a moment to honor SPC Roberto A. Hernandez II for his selfless sacrifice serving in the United States Army until his premature death on June 2 in Afghanistan.

Hernandez was a member of a family that believes in serving their country and their community. His grandfather and two uncles served in the Army; his mother, Paulina Campell- Richards, served in the Air Force. Hernandez's aunt, Virginia Tomlinson, has been and continues to be an active member in the community, and was one of the benefactors of the basketball tournament.

Thanks to all those who came out to support the event: the NYPD; School Safety Explorers Color Guard; Sergeant John Martin; Supervisor Lawrence Mungo JRIP; SPC Rodney Sobers of the U.S. Army; the youth of Far Rockaway; and Kelly James, founder of Which Way Youth, and Detective Carl Robinson, the organizers of the tournament.
