Rockaway Lifeguards

Dear Editor,

I came to Rockaway when I was 16 and fell in love with the beach. I am now 50 years old and still love it. Raising four children at the ocean shore, I have become acquainted with many lifeguards over the years.

This past Sunday it was pretty rough at the shore at Beach 84 Street. The lifeguards instructed many swimmers to go only up to their waists, and most followed the instructions; there were a few hard headed people who did not listen. The lifeguards were on their toes all day. One lifeguard in particular, a young lady named Laura P., showed all of us beachgoers commitment to the job. She went in three times to save distressed swimmers; she was exhausted by the end of day. We are so lucky to have such great lifeguards who are there to make our hot days of summer full of fun.

I thanked Laura personally when I left the beach, but I thought the people who go to the Rockaway beach should know what dedicated lifeguards we have, and that they should follow instructions and have fun!
