Proud mom and local Rotary Club member Nancy Hanson poses with son Lucas who will spend a year in Germany as a Rotary exchange student. The Rockaway Rotary's youth exchange program has been rejuninated this year by local resident and Scholars' Academy honor student Lucas Hanson.

Hanson is set to leave for Wolfsburg, Germany in August and spend a year there, going to school and experiencing the life of a typical German boy. In return, the Rockaway Rotary will be welcoming Italian exchange student, Margherita Paganini who will be the guest of local Rotarians while she attends Scholars' Academy.

This student exchange was made possible through Rotary International, Rotary District 7250, the Rockaway Rotary Club and Eastern States Student Exchange (ESSEX).

Rotary International, an organization of business and professional leaders, with more than 1.2 million Rotarians spread throughout 31,000 clubs in more than 165 countries helps coordinate hundreds of student exchanges between many countries throughout the world, giving high school age students the opportunity to learn and experience new languages, cultures, and ways of life.

This program gives the students the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of someone who lives a lifestyle completely different from their own.

Donna Rivera-Downey, the District 7250 Youth Exchange Program (YEP) Chairman, plans to have four exchange students next year. She has assisted two students prepare for exchanges this year, and is excited about the increase in the program next year.
