Registration For Graybeards Family Run Open To All Ages
The seventh annual Graybeards Family Run kicks off on Friday, July 31, 6:30 p.m. at St. Francis de Sales. The night will begin with the Kids Races. These will vary in distance according to age, and will start and finish at Beach 128 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The Rockaway Special Olympians will follow with their always inspiring 1/4 Mile. The 1 Mile Run will begin at 7:00 p.m. The races will be capped by the 5K Run.
Post-race activities will follow immediately at St. Francis de Sales schoolyard. It will include music by the Gray Riders, along with the awards presentations, raffles, children's rides, and plenty of food and beverages.
Advance registration will be at St. Francis de Sales on July 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and July 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. Times for registration on the day of the race is from 4 to 6 p.m. If you just want to take part in the festivities, a $10 contribution will be accepted as you enter the yard. Race directors Keith Goldberg and Joe Featherston encourage you to "Come One, Come All" for an evening of fun for the entire family.
Free Big Apple Games For High School Kids
The Public School Athletic League is once again opening up their summer Big Apple Games Program to teenagers throughout the Rockaways. The recreational program, designed as an extension of the PSAL, offers a variety of recreational opportunities for teenagers. The afternoon and evening teen recreational center operates Monday to Thursday at Far Rockaway High School, which is located at 821 Beach 25 Street. The hours of the program are 1 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. The program will end on August 13.
This program provides activities in various sports, such as wrestling, volleyball, basketball, softball, floor hockey, team handball, gymnastics and ultimate Frisbee. These sites also offer game room activities, arts and crafts and swimming instruction.
All sites are staffed with licensed teachers and school safety officers.
