Rockapulco Summer Run Honors Bob Davan

Rockapulco runners gather on the boardwalk. Rockapulco runners gather on the boardwalk. On the last regular Thursday night for the Rockapulco Summer Run, the series run honored Bob Davan, who is one of Rockaway's best known runners.

At 88-years-of-age, Bob has been running regularly for nearly half a century. His many medals for winning in various age group categories are too numerous to mention. Just the medals that he won in his mid-to-late 70s would take up a whole room. Davan ran his only marathon (NYC) in 1979, but it was the shorter distances on which he thrived. Bob was invited to compete in the prestigious Fifth Avenue mile on several occasions and always medaled against the national field.

At the age of 79, Davan was awarded the NY Road Runners "Runner of the Year," but he regards the Rockaway "Bob Davan Run" as his most memorable honor. It was another great night of running and cookies thanks to John Edwards. The last race of the series, the Nellie Duncan Rockapulco 5K, is tonight at 7:15 p.m. You can register at Beach 96 Street and the boardwalk. "You won't regret the sweat."
