Historical Views of the Rockaways

Will Our Beach Ever Return To The Original Status Of Old?
From The Rockaway Museum by Emil Lucev, Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke

Take a good look at the beach anywhere else but Rockaway!

Look at the dunes and sand catchers and grasses and walkways!

There are no signs; or police giving out summonses; no Parks Department personnel or anything else, mind you! Looks like Robert Moses missed this one folks! Because this state would have told him where to get off … like Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Nelson Rockefeller did when they were president of the United States and governor of New York State, respectively.

The Orwellian and threatening attitude, as well as the spinelessness of city leadership who give in to frivolous and unwarranted lawsuits, are turning our beachfront into a so-called "quagmire." Nobody knows for sure what you can or cannot do anymore! The Robert Moses mentality is getting worse and worse! And here is an example of what was also done by the Moses fun-hating programs at Coney Island in the last century; no, no, no, no, no, a thousand times no peddling, advertising, littering, dogs, fires, bicycling, roller skating, vehicles other than baby carriages and wheelchairs, newspaper for reading only, sitting on railings or steps, bathing rings, rafts, inflated devices, buoyant devices, masks, goggles or fins, persons from midnight to dawn, acrobatics, ball playing, throwing of missiles, throwing of sand, dressing, undressing, tents and shelters, chairs on boardwalk, picnicking on boardwalk, articles hung on signs, benches, baskets, railings, fences, ropes, umbrellas, boats launched or benched, fishing, flying of kites, flags or pennants, digging of holes, creating hazards or nuisances, bathing near jetties or bathe within the lines (buoyed safety lines).

Robert Moses' rules and regulations were almost as onerous as the old prohibition days as was described in a Brooklyn history of the 1980s. No one has ever mentioned what Robert Moses did for fun, besides destroying places and neighborhoods. Does anyone know?
