WISL Celebrates With Youth And Senior Honorees

Harris, Florine Jenkins, and Merlene Booyer During its annual awards luncheon, held at Antun's on Saturday, June 6, 2009, the Women's Industrial Service League, Inc. (WISL) honored five senior citizens for demonstrating outstanding church and community service: Eugenia Angel of First Church of God, Jamaica; Charlie Crawford of St. Luke Cathedral; Minnie Pearl Harris, of First Baptist Church; Ida Mae Harrison of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church; and Doris Israel of Temple Sinai of Long Island. In addition, five graduating high school students were honored for exhibiting the attributes of positive role models in areas which include academia, leadership, extracurricular and community services: Tymel S. Black of Channel View High School for Research; Shaniqua Bradley of Beach Channel High School; Ashley N. Christopher of High School for Public Service; Abyssinia Pla El of Lawrence High School; and Anita Williams of John Adams High School.

The keynote address was delivered by Julia Mae Blair, founder of JMB Nursing School and CEO of New York State Department of Health Home Care Agency.

The Reverend Everett Jenkins rendered songs of praise. New York City Councilman James Sanders Jr. and Dr. Jeremiah C. Gaffney offered motivational and congratulatory remarks to the honorees.

Final remarks were offered by Florine Jenkins, president of WISL. The luncheon was chaired by Jacqueline McMikle.
