Kenny Vance and The Planotones will play the Leon S. Locke Memorial Concert on July 26 at Riis Park as part of the Rockaway Music and Arts Council Summer Concert Series. Songs from their original recordings of classic doo-wop sounds and vocal styles will highlight the second of three summer concerts. More ... Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer recently met with Jonathan Gaska, District Manager for Community Board #14, at the recently installed traffic light at Beach 84 Street and Shore Front Parkway. The community has long fought for the traffic light due to the high volume of traffic and increased number of accidents at this location. More ... Michael Feldman's daughter, Alexis, who is 17, came to him one day with a request. She wanted him to help her with a school assignment to plan a non-profit business. Since Feldman, a real estate broker in Brooklyn, always wanted to work with animals, he suggested collecting money to assist those who needed veterinarian care for this pets but could not afford it. The excited youngsters left Port Authority Bus Terminal to visit volunteer host families in rural and suburban communities throughout 13 Northeastern states and Canada. More ... On Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19, Jacob Riis Park, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, will be participating in the nationwide Fee Free Weekend at America's National Parks. Riis Park, located on the Rockaway peninsula in Queens, has no entrance fee, a beach parking fee of $5 per car is being charged between Memorial Day and Labor Day. More ... During the winter months, he works as a ski instructor near his home in Pennsylvania. His plans for the near future include becoming a certified scuba diver. The Wounded Warriors landed on Rockaway's shores last Thursday evening, with a gala parade that took them from Breezy Point to Beach 126 Street on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and then to the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, where the wounded soldiers and marines met with their Rockaway host families for the first time. Hundreds of locals lined the boulevard to welcome the men and women who have given so much to insure our freedom. The rest of the weekend was taken up with adaptive water sports at Breezy Point and a Saturday night block party at the home of Graybeard Flip Mullen on Beach 134 Street. More ... The Rockaway Music and Arts Council held the first of its series of Sunset Picnic Concerts last Sunday night at a new venue - Riis Park. After a year's hiatus, organization president Steve Yaeger told the 175 people in the audience, "We're back," and indeed they are. The first concert at Riis Park (past concerts were held at Fort Tilden) drew a crowd to see the Rockaway Theatre Company perform numbers of its hit production of "Oklahoma." More ...
