From The Artists Studio Rockaway Artists Alliance

Of Things To Come
Commentary by Susan Hartenstein

Open Mic every Thursday night at sTudio 7, RoCA. Open Mic every Thursday night at sTudio 7, RoCA. Because RAA has been attracting a wide variety of artists that includes filmmakers, the organization has decided to tap into that talent by adding a film festival to its calendar next month. Presently scheduled for Saturday, August 1, the evening will feature several short films ranging in length from several minutes to half an hour. Admission will be free and the screenings will take place in sTudio 7 Gallery, RoCA, with a start time of 7 p.m. The evening will offer popcorn and beverages.

Events like Thursday Open Mike Night have drawn artists of diverse disciplines. The filmmakers who have come present more than one talent that can include music, acting and writing. Indeed, Vincent Biscione has also attended the RAA Writers Group. His list of credits includes producing and directing videos for local musicians. At an RAA general meeting not long ago, another of the filmmakers presented two pilots he made for the Food Network. Artist/playwright/filmmaker Robert Sarnoff had a solo show in sTudio 6 last year and is giving a sneak peek at the festival of an abbreviated version of his latest opus, "The Romeows." The film is a lively, incisive documentary about a group of friends who have stayed together since their college graduation in 1959. Watch for the inside stories of these filmmakers and their work in upcoming columns.

Open Mike Night, which could be moving any time now to the outdoor Moonstage, has gathered some of the best local musical talent and welcomes a myriad of performers including writers reading their own work. Twenty musical performers appeared at the last Thursday event. Occasional RAA Saturday night music events have often grown out of the spontaneous jamming that has occurred on Thursdays. Jazz may soon be in the air at RAA. (But don't say you heard it here.)

Saturday, August 15 a full day of music will be hosted by RAA. During the day there will be Music on the Beach. In the evening RAA and Brooklyn Brewery are presenting a music event in Tribute Park. More on this in a future column.

The Writers Group next meets on Monday, July 20 at 6 p.m. in sTudio 7. Discussion will be devoted to the special Sunday afternoon event the group will present during the run of ARTSPLASH, RAA's annual fall arts festival. To the awards given each year at ARTSPLASH for the best in visual arts, awards for the performing arts will be added this year. The public will be making the choices. The writers event will feature staged prose readings, short plays, poetry, etc. of group members. Any type of material could be read, either by the author or someone else. If you wish to participate as a member and/or have ideas to contribute, you are welcome to come on the 20th of July.

Robin Pogrebitskiy has been a fixture at RAA for years. "Robin's Garden" in sTudio 7, where his studio is located, is a wondrous gathering of phantasmagorical creatures, animal, mineral and vegetable, that Pogrebitskiy has sculpted … no, spun like a wizard … from pieces of driftwood he finds on the beach. In celebration of his 80th birthday and in tribute to his father, an artist as well, an exhibit showcasing the work of the two men will be presented this summer. The elder Pogrebitskiy created powerful drawings of political and social commentary - commentary as relevant today as they were when they first appeared more than seventy years ago. The exhibit opens Sunday, August 16. Watch for more about this unique show in upcoming columns.
