Clarification On Bicycle Regulations
Would it be possible to help me clarify the varying posted regulations regarding bicycling on the boardwalk?
Usually, the posted signs indicate that bicycling is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. (By the way, this regulation doesn't seem to be enforced!)
I recently saw a sign stating that bicycling is prohibited on weekends between May 1 and September 30. (This regulation isn't enforced either. During my 4 p.m. Sunday walk on the boards I saw about a dozen cyclers!)
I asked the police about this and I was told that they deal only with crime, not Parks Department regulations. According to the police, the Parks Department is supposed to enforce the posted regulations.
I spoke to several of the "green shirts" or Parks Department personnel. I got different stories.
One person said that he could only enforce the regulation if he saw someone coming up a ramp on a bicycle.
Another Parks Department green shirt told me that his supervisor (on a bicycle, no less!) told him not to enforce this regulation.
Could you, if possible, help to clarify this for me and other Rockaway residents? I can't seem to get any answers.
