Legion Remembers Anthony J. Minei

This week, the American Legion marks the passing of a man they call a "stalwart member of the American Legion," Anthony J. Minei,

A native son of Arverne, Minei attended local schools and graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1936. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Throughout World War II, Minei saw combat action in the Pacific and African theaters. Following honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant in 1945, he returned to Rockaway and began a 36-year career with the New York Telephone Company, retiring as a supervisor.

He married Genevieve (nee Sorrentino) in 1946 and together they raised five children.

Minei joined the Daniel M. O'Connell Post #272 in 1947 and was involved with the American Legion and veterans causes for the rest of this life. Most notably, Anthony served as Post Commander, Queens County Commander, 10th District Commander, and N.Y.S. Department Commander for the 1996 convention. He also held a variety of National positions within the American Legion. Private funeral was arranged by the family last week.
