Broad Channel Bits

Summertime is humming along, with lots of activities to keep everyone entertained in our community!

BCAC Cheerleading Pre-registration will be held on Wednesday, July 15 at the BCAC field at 6 p.m. Ages 3 to 13 candidates will cheer for BCAC football teams at home games. A registration fee will be collected at our first meeting (TBA). Contact Gwen at 718- 945-5098 or Tracy at 347-246-6860.

A summer mass schedule at St. Virgilius Church will be in effect during July and August when the Saturday mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m.; the Sunday 10 a.m. mass will remain unchanged. The sign up sheet for new Altar Servers is in the back of St. Virgilius Church; boys and girls who will be 9 during 2009 are eligible to participate. Training will start in late August.

The Book Discussion Group will meet on a different day at a different time during the month of July—on Friday the 17th at 1 p.m. at the library. The book to be discussed will be "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom, who wrote "Tuesdays with Morrie," which has been published in many languages and in many different countries. All are invited.

The Shad Creek Association will present its 15th Annual "It's A Fluke" Fishing Tournament on Saturday, July 11. The Association is located at 529 Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel, NY on Jamaica Bay. The Captain's meeting/sign-up will be Thursday, July 9 from 5 p.m. till … ! The tournament runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weigh in is at the clubhouse and there will be a BBQ and beverages at the weigh-in party! Christ Presbyterian Church will present Bingo in the Church Hall on Noel and Church Roads on Wednesday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 29. Doors open at 6 p.m. Early Bird is at 6:30 p.m. Bingo starts at 7 p.m. Donation is $5. Coffee, tea and cake will be served.

On Friday, July 17 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. join "Night of the Moths" in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Join moth expert Steve Walter. A brief presentation on the Jamaica Bay moths will be held indoors before going into the moths' world. Advance sign up at 718-318-4340.

On Saturday, July 18 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, observe an osprey family with a park ranger while getting an idea of the West Pond Trail's nature. Bring binoculars and insect and sun protection. Sign up for either tour at 718-318-4340.

The library will have many activities over the summer. Storytelling in the Park will take place on Fridays, July 10, 17, 24, 31 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Broad Channel Park with the librarian and the Queens Recreation team for storytelling, crafts and activities. From 1 to 4 p.m. all can play board games in the library.

The BCVFD will sponsor the 3rd annual "Movie Night Under the Stars" at the BCAC ball field at 2nd Road on July 18 at 8 p.m.. They will be serving old time drive-in style snacks; bring your blankets and lawn chairs. A small admission fee will be charged per family. Our presentation for the evening will be "ET: The Extraterrestrial." "Please join us for a fun night with the family and enjoy our presentation on our 25-foot screen."

The BCVFD will host the 2nd annual "Irish Festival" on Saturday, August 8 at the BCAC Memorial Ball Field at 2nd Road from noon till dusk. This year's event will feature two bands: Jamison's Revenge and Finn's Fury. More vendors are expected and activities for the kids will be available. This year tents will be installed to cover the expanded rest and dining area to provide a shaded area so the guests can get out of the August sun. Many improvements to last year's fantastic festival have been planned. "Come out enjoy the bands, pipes and drums, and DJ. Eat, drink and enjoy the atmosphere."

Be on the lookout for flyers and signs advertising Mardi Gras events. Our friends in the Ruffle Bar, Grassy Point and the Bayview will be hosting special events throughout the summer.

BCVFD's junior department currently meets four times a week, Monday evenings 5:30 p.m., Tuesday afternoons at 4 p.m., Wednesday afternoons at 4 p.m., and Sundays at noon. BCVFD is trying to expand the program but needs more supervisors. Please contact the vollies if you or your child is interested.
