KidsmART Saved
Commentary by Susan Hartenstein

From the administrators of kidsmART: The good news: We've received official word from DYCD that RAA's funding for the kidsmART after-school program has been fully restored for fiscal year 2010. We have no doubt that the restoration of funds is in large part due to the enormous volume of letters RAA members, board members, kidsmART parents and community members sent to elected and DYCD officials.

A couple of months after Education Program Director Marina Callaghan spearheaded this RAA initiative and it was coordinated throughout RAA and the community, other OST Option II programs joined the fight. The united outcry led to a motion to use state funds to restore OST Option II. Funding should be re-instituted on or about September 1.

We offer tremendous thanks to everyone in the community who voiced his or her support for RAA and kidsmART and took the time to tirelessly write letters and make phone calls. Without your support this would not have been possible. It is an honor for us to continue serving the children of the peninsula.

We would also like to thank DYCD Commissioner Jeanne Mulgrav, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Councilmen Ulrich and Sanders for their support of OST Option II Programs in general and specifically kidsmART. Their commitment to quality after-school education will directly benefit the children of Rockaway.

Saturday, July 11 at 8 p.m., the Dzieci Theatre Company is returning to RAA's sTudio 7 indoor stage for an encore presentation of "Makbet." This interpretation of the classic Shakespeare tragedy uses gypsy and European folk themes to retell the tale of political ambition and ruthless power grabbing - a timeless story if ever there was one. Rave reviews followed the previous performances of the play by this inventive company. If you missed them before, as did I, you will definitely want to come to RoCA this weekend to experience what some have called "riveting" theater. Admission is by donation. Suggested donation is $10. Visit: dziecitheatre.org for more information about the troupe.

The next RAA general meeting is Monday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m. in sTudio 6 Gallery in RoCA, Fort Tilden. Featured will be a visual and audio presentation by photographer Anthony Al- meida titled, "The Everglades, Vanishing Splendor - An Awakening." This incredible subtropical wonder is being threatened by human encroachment. Almeida has recorded its splendor and advocates for its protection. He writes on his website, "Emerging from portals of darkness into vaporous morning light, like a wary ninja, mired in mist and changing in form, the everglades awakens. From countless creatures, ironically unaware of the threats to their own existence, erupts a chorus of chirps, mating calls and songs." Visit: anthonyalmeidaphotographer. com.

Come Monday to see the sights of a natural wonder, to be inspired and to share your artwork with others. RAA general meetings are open to the public. All are welcome.

Another feather in the cap of RAA's Renée Radenberg. She was honored with the 'Best Work' award in the Bay Ridge Gallery 364 art competition, "RECYCLE, REUSED, RESCUED," for her medium sized glass (scrape stained glass and found glass) mobile, "Wave." The exhibition is on view through July 23, by appointment only (917-767- 3848), at 364 72 Street, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn (between 3rd and 4th Avenues).

Radenberg's artwork will be featured in a solo show, "Glass and Water," at RoCA in November and December. Remember that an exhibition showcasing some of the finest printmakers in New York City will grace sTudio 6 Gallery from September 13 through October 1, 2009.

ARTSPLASH: Deadline for submission of entries is August 10, 2009.

Exhibition dates: September 12 - October 11, 2009. Opening reception: Sunday, September 13, 1-3 p.m.

RAA's annual fall arts festival showcases visual and performing artists of all mediums. It is presented in partnership with the National Park Service/Gateway National Recreation Area.

For a downloadable entry form and prospectus, please visit: rockawayartistsalliance. org or call the RAA office at 718-474-0861.

Last call for the 2009 Photo Contest: "A Salute to Tribute Park." You still can submit by hand delivery through Monday, July 13 to the RAA office at 260 Beach 116 Street, second floor. Visit: rockawaychamberofcommerce. com for full information.

A happy and healthy "mazel tov" to Esther Grillo and Heather Tubridy. Both RAA members retired at the end of this school year. The New York City school system has lost two valuable assets. Marina Callaghan says of them that Grillo was a dedicated, talented computer teacher at John Adams High School. Tubridy was an amazing, intuitive guidance counselor for 28 years at PS 215.
