Joan Briody, a longtime Rockaway resident, died June 28.
Briody was born in Bronx, New York in 1933, the fourth of five children to John and Julia Teahan. She set scoring and rebounding records as a basketball player for Hunter College and was inducted to the Hunter College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. After graduating from college, she taught physical education and health and coached girls' high school basketball at St. Barnabas High School. She also taught CCD and coached CYO softball and basketball at St. Francis de Sales Church and was a member of the Parish Council and Sacred Heart of Jesus prayer group. She also was a Eucharistic Minister and brought Communion to the homebound of the parish. She was a Belle Harbor resident for 40 years.
Briody is preceded in death by her husband, James J. Briody; parents, John and Julie Teahan; sister, Helen Teahan Greene and brothers, Timothy and John Teahan.
She is survived by her sister, Sister Margaret Teahan O.P.; children, Jimmy (Mary), Joanne, Mary Howell (Mike), Tom (Maureen) and John (Jeanne); grandchildren, Jill, Jimbo, Michael, Aidan, Dylan, and Grace Joan; scores of nieces, nephews, greatnieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A memorial service was held at St. Francis de Sales Church, Belle Harbor.
