Nazario Enjoys Opportunity Coaching At Empire Challenge
      Beach Channel/Channel View High School varsity football coach Victor Nazario wasn't happy as the final whistle blew at James M. Shuart Stadium last Tuesday night on the campus of Hofstra University. Nazario was standing on the losing sidelines as the New York City all-star high school football team lost to Long Island, 31-14 at the Outback Empire Challenge.

      Obafemi Alese was staring at the crossroads after his sophomore year at Molloy High School. The Far Rockaway native knew his father Olusesun could not afford to continue paying the large tuition needed to attend the school located in Briarwood.

     Patricia Buccellato (Centerfield), Janiece Hill (Catcher) and Christina Salinas (Shortstop), and captain of the Beach Channel High School softball team, were each nominated to play in the PSAL Exceptional Senior Game held on Friday, June 19 at Long Island University. Go Lady Dolphins!

Happy Birthday America- Love the RBVL
      The Wave had to go to press early this week in order to celebrate the 4th of July holiday properly so there are no volleyball stories from Wednesday night nor are there updated standings. Next week we'll be back on track with both as the season finishes up week seven. We do have a few administrative items to throw at you, though.

Rockaway Rugby's Battle Of The Ages At Irish Fest
      The Rockaway Young Boys vs. Young Men rugby game last weekend at the Aviator Brooklyn Irish Fest was a great time. Thanks to all those who made it out to the match. Many great legends came back to play and show the youth of Rockaway that they still had it. To the shock and dismay of Timmy Kelly, this game was about speed on this hot afternoon.

Rockaway Little League Celebrate Their Baseball Champions
     Last weekend, the Rockaway Little League awarded the title trophy to teams in the Minor League and Pee Wee Senior Division. Long Beach Surgical was one of the teams crowned as Minor League hampions.

Rockapulco Run Heating Up On The Boardwalk
      The Rockapulco Summer Series resumes their annual run after the July 4 weekend festivities. On Thursday, July 9, the CHSAA Past, Present and Future Run will take place. The Bob Davan Run will begin on July 16 and the grand finale of the series will be held on Friday evening, July 24, with the Nellie Duncan Rockapulco Run.

Kellys Kidz Win Rockaway Little League Championship
      On Sunday, June 28, the Rockaway Little League held the Boys Majors Championship game which had the Kellys Kidz team vs. Ford Falcons. The game was a nail-biter as Kellys Kidz pitcher Nial Reen pitched a complete game to help the team win the title 3-2. Emmanuel Gonzalez had an outstanding game at the plate, hitting 3 for 3 and recorded 2 RBIs.

      The Police Athletic League (PAL) will launch its 2009 Summer Program on Monday, July 6. Rockaway will host two play streets that offer sports, arts and crafts, games, music and dance.

Rockaway Outdoors/Tales From The Wheelhouse
      The bay has been slowly winding down as it does at the end of each spring. Usually Fathers' Day or around then the bay water steams up and the big bass leave. Hopefully they'll pop back in and around October. Up front is another story all together. The cooler ocean temperature hovering in the low sixties is pretty appealing to bass and blues alike.

No Rain Gives Par Tee Golf Ladies Chance To Shine
      "I don't fear death, but I sure don't like those three-footers for par." — Chi Chi Rodriguez. At last, a Thursday morning without rain and as a result, 36 ladies came to play golf at Riis Park. This week's standout player was Eileen Watson, who on the last nine holes had eight pars and a birdie! And she did it with borrowed clubs! Watson shot a 62!

      The Brooklyn Cyclones have gotten off to a fast start in the New York Penn League. As of June 30, the Cyclones have an 8-2 record, which is good for first place in the McNamara Division.
