The Wounded Warriors are once again on their way to Rockaway for a weekend of parades, watersports and fundraisers. The annual event, sponsored by the Graybeards, will kick off with a parade east on Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Breezy Point to Beach 126 Street at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 9. The adaptive watersports festival will kick off on Saturday, July 10 at Breezy Point, a festival that enables permanently injured marines and soldiers to participate in water skiing, fishing and scuba diving. On Sunday, July 11, all of the 55 participants and their host families will be present at 7 p.m. for a fundraiser for the Special Olympics program at the home of Rita and Flip Mullen on the beach block of Beach 134 Street. A quick-moving fire raged through Rockaway Park pizzeria on Monday night, gutting the one-story building and drawing dozens of firefighters from all over the peninsula. The fire department responded to call about a fire in a pizzeria at about 11:54 p.m. on June 29 and found John and John Pizzeria, at 97-02 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, fully engulfed in flames. More...

The show "At The Hop" was presented by PS 114's second grade classes on Tuesday, July 23. It was a competition between two groups of kids: one of the past doing old rock and roll tunes and one of the present performing the music of today. Among the songs sung were "At the Hop," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Back to the Future," and "Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay." The kids were great, energetic and obviously enjoyed doing the show. Helen R. Alessi, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died June 26. Alessi was born in Rockaway Beach, the third child of Rose and Angelo Lautazi. She was a teacher at St. Camillus Church for 27 years. During her time there she also photographed the St. Camillus Fire and Drums Corps. More...
