Irene Nickerson, 88, a longtime Rockaway resident died June 12.
Nickerson was born in New Brockton, Alabama on August 31, 1920 and was a domestic worker. She became a member of First Baptist Church in the 1930's.
Nickerson is preceded in death by her husband Edward Nickerson and son, Edward Nickerson, Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Ann Jeanette Rumph of Jamaica, New York; Corine Biggs of Hempstead, New York; daughter-in-law, Frances Nickerson; sisters, Minnie P. Harris of Inwood, New York and Carrie Reynolds of New Brockton, Alabama; brother, James Harris of New Brockton, Alabama; grandchildren, Rosalyn, Karyn, Leroy Jr., Debra, Lonnie, Keith, Kim, Yolanda and Katura; granddaughter-in-law, Joanne Rumph; sixteen great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church, Far Rockaway. Interment was at Rockville Cemetery, Lynbrook, New York.
