PPA Hosts Mini-Grant Initiative Award Presentation
On June 6, 2009, Peninsula Preparatory Academy Charter School honored their dedicated teachers at the First Annual Mini-Grant Initiative Award Presentation. The Mini-Grant Initiative required the school's teachers to create a project that was aligned with NYS learning standards, demonstrate academic rigor and include a method of measuring growth in the area of their choice. A spokesperson said that the submitted projects were incredibly innovative and creative and were done collaboratively with the scholars.
The projects were submitted to and graded by the Peninsula Preparatory Board of Trustees. The grading rubric was from 1 - 4 and the awards ranged from $250 to $1100. They were on display at the newly renovated Community Church of the Nazarene in Far Rockaway, where the event was held. Guest speaker and presenter was founding board member, the Honorable Malcolm A. Smith. Also in attendance were Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer and representatives from the Arverne by the Sea development, the Department of Education and District Manager Jonathan Gaska's office.
Many of the school's families attended and many of the scholars presented informative narratives on the creation of their projects. "We are very proud of both teachers and scholars and look forward to the Second Annual Mini-Grant Initiative with even more participants and awards," stated the school spokesperson.
